Water
You are made up of around 70% water, so doesn’t it make sense to drink the highest quality water possible? Every single chemical reaction, cell, muscle and organ in your body relies on water. Staying hydrated can be one of the best ways to maintain health and wellbeing throughout your life and is essential if you are to expect any benefit from this program.
It is extremely difficult to heal the body when it is dehydrated. When it comes to the stomach and digestive system, it is particularly relevant to stay hydrated because an adequate water supply lines the stomach and prevents any damage occurring from the secretion of hydrochloric acid.
How much water and when?
For this program, I evaluated the work of Dr. Batmanghelidj and formed recommendations based upon this research. In his monumental book, Your Body’s Many Cries for Water, he outlines fundamental principles we should all know about water. Batmanghelidj suggests drinking 0.033L of water (33mls) per kg of body weight to attain optimal hydration.89 90 This can also be calculated as half your body weight in ounces of water per day.
EXAMPLE: 100kg (220 lbs.) male requires 3.3L (approx. 14 cups) of water per day plus additional water for exercise.
EXAMPLE: 70kg (154 lbs.) female requires 2.3L (approx. 10 cups) of water per day plus additional water for exercise.
In this program, I suggest that you add a pinch of Himalayan or high-quality sea salt to your drinking water (not so much that you can taste it) to increase the total dissolved solids and subsequent absorption of the water (which will also prevent you from weeing all day).
Drinking 500-750mls (2 to 3 cups) of pure water as soon as you wake up is a fantastic way to rehydrate after your body hasn’t had access to water all night. It is also one of the best ways to shed excess weight and toxins, because your body can relax knowing it has a constant supply of water. If you wish, you can do a glass of water with fresh lemon juice squeezed into it, but be sure to have a glass of fresh water afterwards to protect your teeth.
Where should I get my water?
There is a lot of controversy about the consumption of municipal waters that often contain fluoride and chlorine. This is not a topic that we will explore in-depth in this book. That being said, chlorine and fluoride are strong antimicrobial substances, which is why we use them to ensure a clean, uncontaminated water supply. However, due to these properties, chlorine and fluoride can indeed have a negative impact on your microbiome when you consume them! This is just common sense—not a philosophical standpoint. If we are interested in maintaining the balance of healthy bacteria within the GI tract, then we should not be ingesting water that has been treated with these chemicals.
